Bobby Dove, the Canadian singer-songwriter, is quickly becoming a magnetic presence in the world of Country and Americana music. With a voice as powerful as their storytelling, this trans/non-binary troubadour pays tribute to the golden age of Country, while crafting original, emotionally charged songs that “blend genres with the touch of a master.” (Mary Gauthier)
Dove’s journey into the lore of early honky tonk started at The Wheel Club, a long-standing institution in Bobby’s hometown of Montreal, Quebec. It was there that Bobby was mentored by steel-player (and radio legend) Bob Hill, and where Bobby picked up a variety of stringed instruments, plunging into rabbit hole of pre-1965 Country music.
Bobby released their debut EP Dovetales in 2013, followed by their first full album in 2016, entitled Thunderchild. In 2021 Bobby released their sophomore album, Hopeless Romantic, coproduced with Blue Rodeo’s Bazil Donovan, and Tim Vesely (Rheostatics), which gained international acclaim and climbed the Canadian Roots and Alt-Country radio charts. The attention garnered from this record earned Bobby a record deal in the Netherlands, leading to their first European in 2022/23.
“I’m not sure if Hank Williams or Hank Snow kept a mistress in Montreal or Manitoba maybe we didn’t hear about and passed some genes down, or what has possessed Bobby Dove to become like a vessel or channeller for all the great classic country music influences we so sorely miss. But this is some of the most authentically-rendered and true-to-inspiration country music you can root out, while still holding onto enough originality to hit your ears with a welcomed freshness.” – Saving Country Music (USA)
Bobby Dove has given highlight performances at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Vancouver Island Music Fest, Winnipeg Folk Fest and Tivoli Vredenburg in Utrecht, NL. Along the road, Bobby has collaborated with luminaries such as Fats Kaplin, Mary Gauthier, Richard Thompson, Ray Benson, and Lavender Country.
Currently based in rural Manitoba, Bobby Dove is preparing to release a new full-length album in 2025, produced by Aaron Goldstein (Cowboy Junkies/City and Colour). Bobby will be on tour in 2024, with plenty of stops across Canada, including a concert at the National Arts Centre, a set at Dauphin’s Countryfest, and official showcases at Folk Music Ontario conference, as well as Americanafest in Nashville, Tennessee.
